Can Mario Balotelli Lead the Azzurri to Glory in Euro 2012?
The Italian national team was dealt a double blow with the participation of Giuseppe Rossi and Antonio Cassano in Euro 2012 thrown into doubt, yet the emergence of Mario Balotelli could serve as the perfect remedy for coach Cesare Prandelli’s concerns.
Balotelli had a slow start to the English season but he has been scoring regularly in recent weeks prompting Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini to praise him. Balotelli and Mancini worked together during their stint with Inter and it was only a matter of time before Mancini would be able to get the best out of Balotelli. The young Italian striker did not get along with former Inter coach Jose Mourinho and has had a controversial career with his erratic behavior on the pitch and off field antics.
His scoring run with the Citizens and most recently his first goal in Azzurri colors have shown that Balotelli can be decisive if used properly. At City, he did benefit from the Carlos Tevez fiasco which paved the way for him to get more playing time while the absence of both Rossi and Cassano has opened the door for Balotelli to shine on the international scene. Mario responded positively by scoring a decent goal against Poland and then went on to help create the second one scored by Giampaolo Pazzini.
Italian boss Prandelli had hinted on a previous occasion that he would like to incorporate Balotelli into a trident attack along with Rossi and Cassano. The current uncertainty might force coach Prandelli to rely on Balotelli first and surround him with complementary players.
Pazzini could be one of the players tasked with partnering Balotelli but there are other potential names such as Juventus striker Alessandro Matri who is having a fine season. Prandelli will be careful not to jump to conclusions with Euro 2012 still a distant event. If Cassano and Rossi recover in time then they will both be included. Even if they are missing, Balotelli has shown he is up to the task of carrying the attacking burden.
There is no doubting Mario’s talent and skills but questions remain about his temperament. If he can stay away from trouble and avoid controversy, both on and off the pitch, then Mario can successfully focus on leaving his imprint on the club level and the international scene.
Italy will be looking to Balotelli to lead the line next summer with the likes of veteran Andrea Pirlo and emerging midfielder Claudio Marchisio offering support. Balotelli’s unpredictability will fit well with Prandelli’s plans to make Italy tougher to defend against and figure out.
The Italian coach has done a great job helping the Azzurri regain the passion to win matches while putting in strong performances. At this rate, it will not be far fetched to see the Azzurri triumph in Euro 2012 with Balotelli spearheading the attack.

Serie A League Format
Serie A TIM starts in August and ends in May. Each team plays 38 matches. The teams play eacher other twice, once at home and once away. The winner is the club with the most number of points after the regular season. In case of two teams finishing with the same number of points the winner will be determined by their head-to-head confront, if the tie persists the goal differential is next deciding criterium. The top 2 teams automatically qualify for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. Third and fourth place will enter the Champions League in the third round of the qualifying process and must play and win a two-legged knock out match to enter the group phase. The teams that finish fifth and sixth qualify for the UEFA Cup.
Serie A History
Serie A (Italian pronunciation: (ˈsɛːrje ˈa]), now called Serie A TIM due to sponsorship by Telecom Italia, is a professional league competition for football clubs located at the top of the Italian football league system and has been operating for over eighty years since 1929. It had been organized by Lega Calcio
until 2010, but a new league, the Lega Serie A, has been created for
the 2010–11 season. Serie A has produced the highest number of European Cup
finalists: Italian clubs have reached the final of the competition on a
record twenty-six different occasions, winning the title twelve times. Serie A is ranked 4th among European leagues according to UEFA's league coefficient, which is based on the performance of Italian clubs in the Champions League and the Europa League. It also ranked 5th in world according to the first trends of the 2011 IFFHS rating.
In its current format, the Italian Football Championship was revised from having regional and interregional rounds, to just one solid league from the 1929–30 season onwards; the Serie A system carries on today. The championship titles won before 1929 are officially recognised by FIGC as a championship in the same way the ones since then are. The 1945–46 season, when the league was played over two geographical groups due to WWII destructions, is not statistically considered, even if its title is fully official.
The league hosts three of the world's most famous clubs as Juventus, Milan and Internazionale, all founding members of the G-14, a group representing the largest and most prestigious European football clubs; Serie A was the only league to produce three founding members. More players have won the coveted Ballon d'Or award while playing at a Serie A club than any other league in the world. Milan is one of two clubs with the most official international titles in the world. Juventus, Italy's most successful club of the 20th century and the most successful Italian team, is tied for fourth in Europe and seventh in the world in the same ranking. The club is the only one in the world to have won all possible confederation competitions and the club world title. Internazionale, following their achievements in the 2009–10 season, became the first Italian team to have achieved The Treble.
